GOOOOD MORNIN’ VIETNAM
Getting to Vietnam was no easy feat, we flew from London to Doha to Bangkok to Hanoi (Vietnam). We had only done the south of Vietnam a few years ago and loved it so we were doubly excited about seeing the north. After 28 hours of waiting in airport, flying, waiting in transit, flying, waiting in transit, flying and then eventually getting to our destination, we were S.P.E.N.T! Not to mention our body clocks were completely obliterated due to a cruel case of jet lag, so we splashed out on a bit of long awaited luxury on a beautiful resort for some rehab. We had grand plans to go on a cruise on Halong Bay but decided to sack the idea as we were simply too exhausted and figured it would be better another time when we could enjoy it properly. Exhausted as in having an arvo “nap” at 2pm and waking up the following day. Plus, it didn’t help that the bed made us feel like Care Bears sleeping on soft clouds. We also decided it was high time to keep it “dry” for a few days and steered clear from all alcoholic drinks – which helped us to become super fit because every time we felt like a drink, we sentenced ourselves to the gym. We ended up having three workouts every day. The absolute highlight of Vietnam was the food – especially that on the streets. Whilst hygienic hospitality may not be Asia’s strongest trait, they sure know how to dish up one helluva tasty meal – our fave: Phó. A tasty broth with noodles, meat (in our case usually chicken), basil, lime, coriander and chili – which we devoured at least twice every day. Second fave was the breakfast at the hotel – not overly cultural but the BEST goddamn omlettes in the universe. And we don’t usually even like omlettes! The spread was amazing, by far the most impressive, fresh and varying we’ve ever witnessed… And unlimited lattes was the icing on the cake. The rest of our time in Hanoi saw us either roaming the buzzing streets, relishing an hour long massage (for $8), or poolside with a virgin Gin and Tonic; which is tonic and a slice of lemon. Tough life.
WIN:
Vietnamese people are the sweetest little cupcakes you’ll ever meet. They’re ever so polite and obliging with smiles from ear to ear.
FAIL:
So many tourists! Last time in Vietnam, we felt like we were the only westerners in the country. Not so much this time.
