SNOW PATROL
For years now, Ads has been crunching at the bit to revisit Austria – a possible candidate for his favourite country in Europe on his previous tour. We made the drive from Venice to Innsbruck in one full day and marveled at the most scenic drive we’ve ever been on. We were warned that Austria (and Germany) is renowned for their uncapped speed limits on the autobahn (freeways), so we had to get a run up an hour prior to crossing the border. As we approached the Italy/Austria border, ol Vic was flat chat trying to keep up with the Mercs, Porches and Audis screaming past… and bless it, Vic came through with the goods and clocked out at 170km/hr but not without a severe wobble at the wheel or a deafening squeal coming from the bonnet. We eventually got into Innsbruck and checked into our homely B&B that was tucked up in a cobblestone square, surrounded by cozy restaurants, cafes and boutiques. The owners of the B&B also owned the patisserie next door so our generous (and naughty) breakfasts of pastries, cream cakes and of course, apple strudel hardly helped the ‘situation’ we had going on around the waist. Now, our main reason for going to Innsbruck was because it was close to Stubai Glacier which offered year round skiing and we were itching for some action on the slopes. There’s been a major rivalry between both of us regarding this sensitive issue as Kez grew up skiing – where Ads has always been a snowboarder. But when we learned that snowboarding is almost frowned upon in these parts, Ads turned his hand to skiing instead. This provided for some pant wetting moments as he plowed into innocent bystanders but within a few hours he was carving it up like a pro – may have had something to do with his red hot instructor… or maybe it was the steins atop the mountain that spurred a bit more confidence. After our days on the slopes, we became regulars to a fantastic Thai restaurant – dishing some of the best Thai we’ve ever had… Thailand included. In our opinion, Innsbruck is up there with one the most beautiful places we’ve ever been to.
WIN:
Powder Snow – Ads’s hindquaters loves your soft qualities.
FAIL:
Swarovski Kristelwelten (Crystal World): a complete waste of time and money and you’ve lost your number one advocate. Stakeholders can expect a severe downturn in profit.
