There’s No Place Like Rome
It’s no secret that traffic in Rome is ridiculously crazy – and not something that we’d dream of subjecting little Vic to so we bunkered down in possibly our dodgiest hotel to date (but far from the cheapest) in Arezzo – a gorgeous little town in Tuscany that is worthy of a visit in it’s own right. Ads had been busting to experience the high speed train so we jumped on and shot through the stunning countryside, landing in Rome within what felt like the blink of an eye. To see the Colosseum still standing in all of it’s glory with a city of 3 million people buzzing around it was almost beyond comprehension. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a snap of this global landmark whilst we were waiting out the front so Ads asked an American lady holding a mammoth professional looking camera, who would surely know how to capture the moment. We didn’t consider that her inch thick glasses were at all a sign of severe vision impairment and when we reviewed her mastery that she was overtly impressed with… well, you can see the quality below. Shortly thereafter, we discovered she was just holding her husband’s camera whilst he was getting a drink but we didn’t have the heart to request another knowing that there’d be plenty of other kodak moments to come. After the Colosseum, we followed the masses and stalked the likes of Trevi fountain, the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Roman & Imperial Columns. There was a definite romance in the air and to just sit back in the Piazza Navona over a long lunch and a few gentle wines was certainly one of the best ways to enjoy such a throbbing city. As the sun began to retreat behind the cityskyline, we made our way to the Vatican City and indulged the visual senses watching the sun setting over such incredible architecture, history and detail. An extremely full day of walking and sightseeing had us exchange the mutual glance of “enough?” and we eventually got on the last Eurostar that night back to Arezzo – naturally with a our traditional bottle of merlot and plastic cups.
WIN:
The seamless mix of super old and uber trendy. We consider it as the Karl Lagerfeld of cities.
FAIL:
Budget, time and disorganisation didn’t really cater for much longer in Rome which we would have loved. Oh well, will just have to be satisfied with the other few places that we’ve been to.
