WASHINGTON, D.C.

POSHINGTON DC

After absolutely flogging ourselves in Chicago, we made our way to the nation’s capitol, Washington DC with our heads a pounding an kidnies a bruised. We found a great little B&B in the heart of the political action in Dupont, the super duper trendy area of the city. We got there in the afternoon so had a brief snoop around and had dinner at a funky little Mexican restaurant that had the best Margerhitas I’ve ever had. The streets, buildings and culture in DC are certainly not how I remember it, which is a good thing! On our second day, we set out on an epic tour by foot of the city, checking out the must see monuments and museums of the city. We stepped out the Whitehouse where the paps were waiting for a press conference by Obama. We visited the American Holocaust Museum which was a heart wrenching and emotionally confronting experience that also had actual Holocaust survivors there openly talking (one on one) about their horrific story. After we pulled ourselves together, we made our way to the Museum of American History that showcased the inaugural gowns and various dresses of the First Ladies, some dating back to the 1800s. A personal fave was the Jackie O cabinet, her style and taste was so far beyond time, the classics are still something you would see in today’s Vogue. There was a vast array of all things American including an original boat that was sunk in the 1700s, still with the canon ball lodged in the side, Dorothy’s Ruby Red Slippers as well as some of the original Muppets. That night, we were invited over to dinner to some guys’ place that we were referred to by one of our ‘Chicago connections’. Jeff and Bill only lived around the corner from where we were staying so we strolled the beautiful streets and were welcomed into their beautiful apartment and had a beautiful meal. Jeff is a lawyer and history major whilst Bill works at the Pentagon and is in the military so the night consisted of some very interesting and engaging conversation. After absorbing their stories like a chamois, we piled into their car a touch after midnight and were treated to a grand personalized tour of the monuments. The best part was seeing these amazing structures lit up at night… and basically having them to ourselves! It was a unanimous highlight for us, although we are still undecided if it was the great food, ocean of information or the awesome company so we’re going to run with all of it!

WIN:
DC is such a balanced mix of world changing politics, culture, history and style. Where else could you find such an intriguing fusion. Certainly not Canberra!

FAIL:
The day after our history binge, we were set for Philadelphia when we discovered our hot wheels had been locked up in the parking station! We sorted it out after hours of running around in circles and even got a refund for the inconvenience!
